Blue flax flowers are whispery and tall, reminding me of open American prairie landscapes and some of my favorite childhood literature, where kids might pull the flax from the ground to make them into jewelry or mats, or to use them for wiping bugs out of water buckets they needed to carry home for supper. The small blue flowers on the plants are a perfect symbolic flower to use in paintings of America, and though you might not want them cultivated in your yard, they definitely soften plenty of landscapes, particularly those that appear jagged and rocky.
